As a pioneer of Nordic design, Iittala draws on a heritage of craftsmanship, design and culture that dates back to 1881. For us, design is about creating objects that combine beauty and function while reflecting the evolving ways people live, gather and express themselves.
Sustainability is an important part of how we approach design and business. We focus on creating products with quality, functionality and enduring aesthetics, while working to reduce emissions, reduce waste generated in production, support reuse through services such as Vintage, and increase the use of recycled and recirculated materials.
As part of Fiskars Group, Iittala's sustainability efforts are guided by two long-term commitments: Pioneering design against throwaway culture and Making the everyday extraordinary. These commitments focus on extending the life of products and materials, advancing circular solutions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fostering an inclusive culture, and creating positive experiences for people and communities. Climate action is guided by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated emissions reduction targets covering our operations, value chain and supplier engagement.

The cornerstones of our design are timeless aesthetics, high quality and functionality. We design products with the ambition that they remain relevant and useful over time.
In design, we focus on the essentials: high quality, multifunctionality and enduring aesthetics. Our aim is to create objects that can be used in everyday life for years to come and have the potential to become future classics.
In the early years of modernism and functionalism, Finnish design pioneers such as Alvar and Aino Aalto and Kaj Franck shaped the foundation of Iittala's design philosophy: combining beauty and function while challenging conventional thinking. This heritage continues to inform how we approach design today.
We continue to develop our collections through collaboration with designers, investment in product development, and by considering material choices, functionality and product longevity from the beginning of the design process. We continuously explore new ideas and opportunities while building on our design heritage.
The Iittala Glass Factory in Finland has replaced its gas-powered glass melting furnaces with electricity-powered furnaces. This transition represents an important step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from glass manufacturing while maintaining the high level of craftsmanship required in glassmaking.
Founded in 1881, the factory continues to combine traditional glassmaking expertise with modern manufacturing technologies. The new electric furnaces support significantly lower carbon emissions compared to the previous gas-powered melting process and form an important part of Iittala's efforts to reduce emissions from its operations.
The factory also uses renewable electricity, further supporting lower-emission glass manufacturing.
At the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland, waste glass is generated during the production and quality control of glass products. Rather than sending this material to landfill, we reuse and recycle it in several ways, including as raw material for our 100% recirculated glass collection. Today, as much waste glass as possible is recycled into products in the collection.
Each item in the collection is made from 100% recirculated glass produced from waste glass generated at the Iittala Glass Factory. The manufacturing process gives every piece its own distinct character, with colours ranging from cool blues to calming greens and earthy neutrals.
At the Iittala Glass Factory, no waste glass is sent to landfill. Waste glass that is not used in the recirculated glass collection is reused or recycled for other purposes, including the manufacture of insulation materials.
Working with suppliers and other partners is an important part of how Iittala operates. We collaborate with partners across our value chain and aim to build long-term relationships that support responsible business practices. Transparency helps us make informed decisions and continuously improve the way we work. We carefully select suppliers and work with them on topics such as environmental performance, human rights, health and safety, and business ethics.
Our suppliers are required to comply with Fiskars Group's Supplier Code of Conduct, which sets expectations for responsible business practices. We also assess and engage with suppliers to support continuous improvement and responsible operations.

For Iittala, design is about people. Respect for human rights is a fundamental part of how we operate, both within our own operations and throughout our value chain. We are committed to supporting safe and fair working conditions and treating people with dignity and respect.
Human rights, health and safety, wellbeing, and equal opportunities are important considerations in our business practices. We work to uphold these principles for our employees and seek to promote them through our relationships with suppliers and other business partners.
As part of Fiskars Group, Iittala's approach to human rights is guided by Fiskars Group's policies and commitments. These provide the foundation for our work on human rights due diligence, responsible sourcing and employee wellbeing. Iittala products are designed to be used and enjoyed for years to come. Through our Vintage service, customers can buy and sell pre-owned Iittala tableware, helping to keep products in use for longer and giving them a new home.
Customers can bring pre-owned Iittala tableware and glassware to participating stores, where each item's condition is carefully assessed. Items suitable for resale are added to the Vintage collection, while products that are no longer fit for resale are reused or recycled where possible.
First launched in Finland in 2019, the Vintage service is now available in more than 40 stores across Finland and Sweden. By making it easier to buy and sell pre-owned tableware, the service helps extend the lifespan of Iittala products and supports reuse.
